Introduction to Spatial Design

ASSIGNMENT 1: POINT + LINE

THIS ASSIGNMENT IS A STUDY ON HOW POINTS AND LINES WORKS AND RELATE TO EACH OTHER. BY CONNECTING DIFFERENT POINTS IN THE STRUCTURE, NEW VOID ARE MADE.

POINT

- MARKS A LOCATION OF SPACE

- DIRECTIONLESS

- 2 ENDS OF LINE

- INTERSECTION OF 2 LINES

LINE

- JOIN, LINK, SUPPORT, SURROUND OR INTERSECT OTHER VISUAL ELEMENTS

- DESCRIBE THE EDGE OF AND GIVEN SHAPE TO PLANES

- ARTICULATE (STATE) THE SURFACE OF PLANES

POINT IS THE MOST BASIC ELEMENT OF LINE. A REPETITION OF POINTS CREATE LINES WHEREAS A LINE THAT ARE JOINED FROM ONE END TO THE ANOTHER BECOMES A PLANE (SHAPE).

SKETCHES:

ARCHITECTURE PICTURES FROM THE INTERNET ARE USED FOR THESE EXERCISES:

OUTCOME:

ALL THE POINTS OF THE STRUCTURE ARE MARKED OUT AND CONNECTED TOGETHER TO CREATE A NEW SPACE.

A WHITE THREAD WAS SEWN INTO THE PHOTO, TRACING THE POINTS AND LINES OF THE FIRST WORK TO CREATE A 2D RELIEF.

A WHITE THREAD WAS WRAPPED AROUND NAILS WHICH INDICATE THE POINTS, TRACING BACK SOME POINTS AND LINES, THUS CREATING A 3D RELIEF.

ASSIGNMENT 2: PLANE + VOID

THIS ASSIGNMENT IS A STUDY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PLANE AND VOID.

PLANE IS A FLAT SURFACE . A LINE EXTENDED IN A DIRECTION OTHER THAN ITS INTRINSIC DIRECTION BECOMES A PLANE.

- OVERHEAD PLANE

- WALL PLANE

- BASE PLANE

VOID IS AN OPEN SPACE IS CREATED WHEN OVERHEAD PLANES, WALL PLANES AND BASE PLANES COME TOGETHER.

VOID FUNCTIONS AS:

- APERTURE FOR LIGHT

- PASSAGE FOR AIR

- ETC...

SKETCHES:

I'M REQUIRED TO PRACTICE IN IDENTIFYING 3 TYPES OF PLANES ON 3 PHOTOS FROM THE INTERNET: JUST LIKE A CROSSWORD PUZZLE!

MAP OF MILAN IS CHOSEN.

THE DIFFERENT SHAPES (HORIZONTAL PLANES FOR 3D DEVELOPMENT) ARE HIGHLIGHTED BEFORE CONSTRUCTING THE FINAL MODEL.

OUTCOME:

TASK: CHOOSE ONE OF THE CITY MAP IN THE WORLD TO BUILD A MODEL TO SHOW THE MEANS OF VOID. MODEL SHOULD BE DEMONSTRATING THE UNDERSTANDING OF BASE PLANE, WALL PLANE AND OVERHEAD PLANE.

ASSIGNMENT 3: PROPORTION + SCALE + BALANCE

THIS ASSIGNMENT IS A STUDY ON PROPORTION, SCALE AND BALANCE.

SCALE REFERS TO OVERALL SIZE AND PROPORTION REFERS TO RELATIVE (COMPARATIVE) SIZE.

SCALE REFERS TO THE SIZE OF AN OBJECT (A WHOLE) IN RELATIONSHIP TO ANOTHER OBJECT (ANOTHER WHOLE). IN ART THE SIZE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AN OBJECT AND THE HUMAN BODY IS SIGNIFICANT.

PROPORTION IN INTERIOR DESIGN REFERS TO THE BALANCE BETWEEN DESIGN ELEMENTS SUCH AS SHAPE, COLOR AND TEXTURE. DESIGNERS AND ARCHITECTS OFTEN LINK PROPORTION WITH SCALE, WHICH REFERS TO THE COMPARATIVE SIZE OF ONE OR MORE OBJECTS AND IS AN ABSOLUTE, FIXED MEASUREMENT.

BALANCE

- SYMMETRICAL

- ASYMMETRICAL

- RADIAL

SKETCHES:

A PRACTICE TO UNDERSTAND PROPORTIONS

SHAPES WHICH REPRESENTS SPACE ARE DISSECTED ACCORDING TO PROPORTION. THIS EXERCISE REMINDS ME OF BAUHAUS DESIGN CONCEPT.

LINES ARE DRAWN AND THE INTERSECTING POINTS ARE HIGHLIGHTED, CREATING PROPORTIONS.

OUTCOME: (S.O.S)

TASK: BALANCE OF SPACE

CREATE SPACE THAT WOULD EMPHASIS ON THE BALANCE IN DESIGN PRINCIPLES USING POINTS, LINES AND COLOURS.

BALANCE ARE CREATED USING POINTS, LINES AND COLOURS WHICH ARE THE ELEMENTS OF SCALE PROPORTION IN THIS ASSIGNMENT.

SYMMETRICAL BALANCE IS CREATED BY MIRRORING THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PREVIOUS PATTERN.

ASYMMETRICAL BALANCE IS CREATED BY BALANCING A FLAT 2D PLANE WITH A 3D RELIEF AS WELL AS THE MANIPULATION OF COLOURS.

I CAN SAY THIS IS DEFINITELY A CHALLENGE I HAVE PICKED UP MYSELF TO EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITIES OF ASYMMETRICAL BALANCE, HOPEFULLY BEING A SUCCESS.
