Introduction to Photography

WEEK 9

PART 1

This week, Mr. Martin touched on the topic of different styles of photography achieved with different shutter speed. The style which I am new to is achieving selective blur in a moving object by pre-focusing the object and pan with the object to achieve a result like this:

1/250 shutter - The all-purpose shutter speed

This technique is cool and challenging, which is scarcely used among Instagram's professional photographers and amateurs. The style which we normally see are:

- bokeh background and a frozen object

- sharp background and a frozen object

Exercise 8: SLOW SHUTTER SPEED PRACTICE

Since the tripods are limited and only four person get to do the practice, instead of going home like the rest, I went out to take some pictures (putting the camera on the floor). Lo and behold, there are a bunch of secondary school students lingering around the walkway wearing colourful clothes, hence some interesting photos are produced.

Arranged from the slowest shutter speed:

Aperture: f/32

Shutter Speed: 8"

ISO: 100

Aperture: f/36

Shutter Speed: 5"

ISO: 100

Ah the primary colours! Such a coincidence!

Aperture: f/29

Shutter Speed: 4"

ISO: 100

Aperture: f/8

Shutter Speed: 1/4

ISO: 100

The busy university life!

The day's activities are not bound to this, we get to visit an exhibition on campus before the practice. Stay tune to know what 'Das Ist ____.' means in the next post!

WEEK 10

PART 2

Mr. Martin gave some comments about the music I chose in the previous blog as well as explaining that the final assignment has to match with the message of the music. I didn't expect to put that much thought into explaining the music and what my direction should be. Should it be something mysterious and have some element that spur delight?

By the way, let's proceed to the shutter speed practice, shall we? 😂

Exercise 9: Slow and Fast Shutter Speed Practice

In a group of 4, have fun practicing together.

Inception. This idea just pop up in front of me. Basically Nafiz, one of my classmate positioned his tripod in front of me and I just took a snap of their team's movement while thanking Nafiz for the tripod and camera besides thanking Nafiz's team on their wonderful performance. After I look at this photo again, to my surprise, I caught the preview screen of my classmate's camera on time, before the screen disappears after each take. This photo shows the invisible perspective of a camera and how the camera can see and record what a human eye can't see.

This photo shows an awareness of loneliness that is prevalent in teens, resulting in peer pressure. Vivian's expression is priceless, showing the daily struggles of a teen who have social anxiety (though she's not haha). As the crown moves on, it is easy to ignore such problems in our own circles. Do we need a camera's perspective in order for us to be aware and help?

I liked this photo because it looks like a graphic computer background or a soundtrack video. I love how the straight white lines looks like a dead heartbeat and how there are some conflicts in the middle of the line, as if someone had just lost in a battle of will victoriously with the company of vibrant and soft coloured light trails.

Have you ever felt like drowning in depression? This is the right photo for you. The way Vivian flips her hair is so awesome as if it is sinking into the deep dark ocean.

Aperture: f/3.5

Shutter Speed: 1/800

ISO: 3200

I don't know about you but this photo makes me fell extremely happy. This photo seems as if it marks the first journey of an angelic friendship, a priceless moment of euphoria. It can also mark the journey of a shampoo advertisement. It is all about perspective. 😂
