PROJECT 1 - IDENTITY! NARRATIVE PROGRAMMING
Hybrid Café + Services + Pop Culture
Here is the assignment brief.
D-0-CK
Pop Culture: Space Travel
Concept: The Vision of the Future

D-0-CK Narration
Commercial space travel is nearer than we think. If mountains can be scaled and deep sea can be explored, then space is not the limit. But in order to travel in a different world, the space tourist must be equipped and fit for the journey. It is time we adapt and evolve into a space human hybrid: Starman. Having the ability of adapting to different worlds and conserving energy resources, humankind will be the next extra-terrestrial galactic civilization that gives life instead of taking it. The idea is to subject humans to a specific environment for the human body to adapt and explore as the main obstacle for space travel is often not technology but the human body.
Target Audience:
Teenagers and adults: sci-fi fan base community, fitness/health community, science lovers, space researchers and travel explorers
Inspiration

My proposal
The pop-culture choice is inspired by my long passion for science fiction related topics. Since this will be a long project, I have to search deep within me for any pop-culture that I'm already interested. What eventually formed is one of my favorite series of Star Trek. Although I consider myself a Trekker (have a liking but not overly following), doing this is something that I love. Besides, this decade has seen many groundbreaking achievements about space from successful return rockets to the first image of the black hole. I see that this topic will be interesting to look into in this season.
Hence, I name this hybrid business as D-0-CK, a place where humans can "dock" by to recharge and be fit for the future. 0 means zero gravity in space, an obstacle for human travel.
Programming & Timeline
Narrative Programming Feedback
Pop Culture & Identity: space - OK Narrative & Content: OK. Some drawings are a bit too small. Add more info on food / café & services (e.g. Café too small cannot see food type) Composition & Visual: Juxtaposition of text! (D-0-CK must not read top to bottom but left to right and incorporate within the objects)
Extra: Viewing dock to be seen more & bigger
Reflection
This assignment helped to push my thinking to the limits as I have trouble coming up with a new hybrid idea. I have to unlearn from what I know about cafes and avoid a "themed" café solution. I also did fall into the trap of service + café and forgot about the pop culture at the start. Confusion became my master as I am desperately finding inspiration elsewhere.
I learned that in order to think out of the box, I have to take a "deep breath" and space out from the inspirations around me by just spending time with my own brain. People often call this a goldfish syndrome where we as humans are spending lesser time in deep thought and are very easily distracted with fast solutions around. Until I just focus in brainstorming do I get an idea on what to propose. I hope in this semester, I get to built the momentum of deep thinking and continuous transformation of ideas.
Through this project, I'm introduced to narrative programming. For me, it is rather fun and exciting as I have background in comics and love to draw comics back in my childhood days. This assignment is like a comic story in one huge slide, just like the comic picture in the newspaper.
Next, I'm going to explore on site application and my own identity branding and it starts here!
PROJECT 2 - SITE EXPRESSION + IDENTITY
Site Measurement+ Art on the Table
This time, it is a concurrent assignment running together to prepare us for multitasking during internship. I have to complete a measurement drawing for Ruang Shah Alam with my team and do my menu and packaging for my space identity at the same time.
This project is a continuation of [PROJECT 1] Identity! Narrative Programming and here is the project brief.
Site Expression through Working Drawings
Both me and Boh, one of my team of 8 worked together to produce Section B-B.
The things that I learned:
1) How to do my own line weight style in AutoCAD
2) How to use layout to scale easily in AutoCAD
3) Draw slanted roof by measuring the height of highest peak and lowest peak from ground level.
4) Ground level differentiation is a must to avoid flooding in
5) walls must be divided clearly to show the main floor slab and walls (not all joined together).
6) Never forget to...
a) indicate door and window hinge symbols
b) glass hatching
Identity through Art on the Table
Art of packaging and menu design.

Packaging Teenagers loves hands-on techy stuffs, especially when one is in love with physics! So why not build your own scientific measuring tools with the help of engineering?

Menu

Since I have the freedom to explore the materiality of the menu. I explored the expensive way of creating a futuristic look by laser cutting on an acrylic. Of course, it looks awesome and interactive in a way users have to tilt it in a right direction to read it in daylight or plug in to an LED light source beneath. However, the LED light illumination don't quite work since the quality of laser is not that good and it appears foggy. Besides, only by engraving do the words pop out (but it is gonna not be cost efficient at all!)
So, I thought of another way of making this menu more functional and yet futuristic: printing on transparency instead.
This way, not only that the colour pops out and it is easier to look at, the cost gives freedom for the café to change and update the menu without worrying much.
I guess I'm having fun with this exploration...*wallet cries*
Presentation!

My presentation board can be further improved by making the images (especially the packaging product) bigger and make the logo smaller.
Next, I am going to work on my final project.
PROJECT 3 - HYBRID HUB
Café + Services
Hybrid hub businesses operate as separate entities that do their own commerce but share a physical space. From sharing bills to the responsibilities of keeping shop, two businesses attract more attention than one and share the same clientele!
This project is a continuation from [PROJECT 2] Site Expression + Identity and here is the project brief.
Design Statement
D-0-CK is a hybrid model for space travel and exploration where you can dock and go further beyond what you experienced on Earth. With commercial space travel nearer than we think, it is time we adapt and evolve into a space human hybrid: Spaceman by having the ability of adapting to different worlds and conserving energy resources. Designed for teens and sci-fi space lovers, this place offers an experiential space travel and food café to explore. Spacemen get to travel through different worlds such as the Space Dock which helps Spacemen to be ready for the journey, Research Station where Spacemen get knowledgeable hands-on, Fanbase where the space geeks gather and Earth 2.0 where the utopia life comes to reality. Spacemen get to earn cashback by participating in activities and making transactions. D-0-CK is collaborating with NASA and the National Space Agency of Malaysia, ANGKASA to inspire, educate and prepare the public on the possibilities of space travel and exploration, furthermore, highlighting the need to protect our own planet. With D-0-CK, we can finally have a glimpse of what it is to travel where no man has gone before with a mindset of discovery, wonder and excitement.

Reflection
This project challenges me by thinking beyond a concept and making it commercialized. I got the chance to explore the activities of space travel and make it possible by integrating the newest technology in space. Not just that, by integrating with a real life site, i am challenged to work with existing structures and embracing the annoying unmovable ones, celebrating them as they take their rightful place.
In this assignment, I learned that I should pay more attention to the original materials being portrayed in my perspectives, not forgetting the ceiling services such as a/c or projectors to be inserted within.
Overall, I felt inadequate. This is a good thing as this drives me with the urgency of learning, especially improving my computer application skills, my board layout taste and time management.
